Harry Potter “Cursed Child” breaks new box office record on Broadway

The play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , which has been on Broadway since April 2018, broke a new box office record: the highest weekly box office in Lyric Theatre history, grossing a total of $2,671,191 (about $14.5 million at the current price). This is the highest weekly box office in Broadway history for a prose theatre production.

By March 2020, the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child had entered the Guinness Book as the highest-grossing prose theatre in history, grossing over $250 million.

The Lyric Theatre, which has hosted the play since its debut and has been fully renovated to receive production (which even included a reduction in the number of seats for a better public experience), has been open since January 1998, having hosted major productions such as Jesus Christ Superstar, 42nd Street, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and Paramour, Cirque du Soleil.

Like the London production, the New York production opened its doors as a two-part piece, in which viewers needed to watch both to see the whole story. After the pandemic, however, the Broadway version was reduced to tell the whole story in a single performance, which premiered on November 12, 2021.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is also the highest-budget play in Broadway history, costing a total of $68 million to be presented to the public. Considering all the productions in the story, the production is in second place, behind only the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, which cost 75 million dollars (and is considered a major failure since it never recovered its exorbitant costs, being entirely rejected by critics).

Cursed Child: Harry Potter in the theatre

Based on a new story by J. K. Rowling, John Tifany and Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in July 2016 in London, becoming an immediate public and critical success. The story takes place twenty years after the events of the last book in the series and tells the story of Harry Potter, now father, and his eldest son, Target, who struggles with the weight of his family legacy.

While trying to deal with the past and the present, Alvo is transported to the past and ends up engaging in a battle for the fate of the magical world. The play is full of amazing special effects and talented actors and has been very well-received by audiences and critics.

In 2018, the play premiered on Broadway in New York (USA), where it broke audience records and repeated critical success. The play is also on display in Melbourne (Australia), Hamburg (Germany), Toronto (Canada) and Tokyo (Japan). In addition to these cities, San Francisco, USA, also received a production on display between December 2019 and September 2022.
