HBO sets ‘Succession’ producers for the Harry Potter Series

The Harry Potter Series on HBO has set two of its key creative team members: Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner and writer for the series, and Mark Mylod will direct several episodes. The two are Emmy Award winners for the TV show Succession and will also serve as executive producers.

The duo joins the previously announced team of executive producers consisting of J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts from Brontë Film and TV (J.K. Rowling’s production company, also responsible for producing the adaptation of the Strike books), as well as David Heyman and his company Heyday Films.

As a showrunner, Francesca Gardiner will guide the creative vision of the series, leading all departments, including the directors. She will also be the head writer for the series, able to share the responsibility with other writers but always maintaining creative control.

On Twitter, author J.K. Rowling said she was “truly excited” to announce the duo. “They both have a genuine passion for Harry Potter and, having read Francesca’s script for the pilot and heard Mark’s vision, I am certain that the series will exceed expectations.”

Francesa Gardiner

In addition to winning two Emmy Awards as a consulting producer on Succession, Francesa Gardiner has been nominated for a third time as co-executive producer of Killing Eve. His credits also include producing and writing the series His Dark Materials: Frontiers of the Universe (alongside Jack Thorne, screenwriter of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and writing episodes of series such as The Man in the High Castle and The Rook.

Mark Mylod

Mark Mylod, on the other hand, has awards for his direction in several episodes of the series Succession, where he even directed the last episode and Game of Thrones. He also directed the pilot for Disney’s Once Upon a Time, episodes of the British and American versions of Shameless, United States of Tara, and the upcoming second season of The Last of Us. He also directed the film The Menu with Ralph Fiennes.

The announcement came shortly after the revelation that the series, previously promoted as a Max original series, Warner Bros.’s streaming service, would now be treated and promoted as an original series on HBO, the company’s main channel, known for its high-profile series, such as House of Dragons, the Game of Thrones spin-off, The Last of Us, Succession, Euphoria, and Chernobyl, as well as classics like Oz, The Sopranos, and Six Feet Under.

According to the official synopsis, HBO is preparing a “faithful adaptation” of the Harry Potter books written by J.K. Rowling. The series will star a new cast to lead a new generation of the fandom, “full of fantastic details and characters that have been much loved for more than 25 years.”

While each season will bring Harry Potter’s adventures to new audiences worldwide, the beloved classic and original films will remain at the heart of the franchise and available to watch globally.

Harry Potter Series premiere date

The series does not yet have an official premiere date, although David Zaslav, president of Warner Bros. Discovery, revealed that the series would ideally premiere in 2026 during a call with investors.
