Harry Potter makes J. K. Rowling the best-selling author of 2020 in Brazil

A report by Nielsen, a company specializing in marketing intelligence, revealed that Harry Potter made J. K. Rowling the best-selling author in Brazil in 2020. The report was exclusively published by the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo.

The report points out that Rowling sold nearly half a million books over the past year, when her sales rose 59% compared to the previous year. With this, the author stayed ahead of successful authors such as Augusto Cury.

The Harry Potter series accounted for 99% of sales, according to the report. The remainder, equivalent to 3,000 books, was divided between Sudden Death, published in 2012, Very Good Lives, the transcription of his speech to graduates of Harvard University’s 2008 class, and The Ickabog,a children’s tale released in November.

The novels of detective Cormoran Strike – which had its fifth volume, Sangue Revolto, published in Brazil in 2020 – were not part of the count, since officially the books are published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

Harry Potter success

Without figures revealed by Editora Rocco, the success seems to repeat itself in 2021, since, in six months, boxes of the Harry Potter series have sold almost half of last year’s total, according to the website PublishNews, specialized in the Brazilian publishing market.

Success is also observed in other countries. In the United Kingdom, Rowling’s birthplace, sales increased by 7% last year, while in the United States the books remain at the top of The New York Times’ list of best-selling children’s titles.
