Cursed Child launches its first North American tour in Chicago
by Marcelo NevesThe Harry Potter stage keeps spreading across the world. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opens its first North American tour this Thursday (26) at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago, after two weeks of preview performances.
It is the first touring production based on the acclaimed Broadway staging. Instead of the original two parts, the tour carries the version condensed into a single show, running about two hours and fifty minutes. Leaner, but with all the theatrical magic that made the play’s name.
The cast brings names familiar to Broadway audiences, such as John Skelley as Harry Potter and Matt Mueller as Ron Weasley. After Chicago, stops in Los Angeles and Washington DC have already been announced as the next destinations, taking the spells to those who cannot make it to New York or London.
For me, this is the kind of news that shows the lasting strength of the story. Almost a decade after its West End premiere, the play keeps winning over new audiences and cities. And nothing replaces the feeling of seeing that magic happen live, uncut, right in front of you.
The play shows no sign of tiring, either: on Broadway it keeps breaking box-office records. And you, would you take a trip to see Cursed Child live?
