LEGO releases the Hogwarts Main Tower, the biggest expansion to the modular castle
by Marcelo NevesLEGO fans who have been building Hogwarts castle in modules have just been handed the missing piece for the collection to really grow. LEGO has released Hogwarts Castle: The Main Tower, described as the biggest expansion to the modular castle made so far.
Set 76454 packs 2,135 pieces and no fewer than 12 minifigures, plus Fluffy, Hedwig and Fawkes, with the imposing Grand Staircase as its centrepiece. The launch price is US$259.99 in the United States, or £229.99 in the UK. The main draw is that this tower connects to the previously released Great Hall set, creating the most detailed and complete version of the castle ever made in LEGO bricks.
The tower has not arrived alone. The June wave includes eight new Harry Potter sets, among them an addition to the Diagon Alley line, with Quality Quidditch Supplies and Florean Fortescue’s ice cream parlour, plus a Privet Drive set based on Aunt Marge’s visit in Prisoner of Azkaban.
I have a soft spot for these modular sets, because they turn the build into a long-term project. You do not buy a finished castle; you raise it bit by bit, module by module, as though building your own little corner of Hogwarts on the shelf.
The bitter side, as ever, is the cost. A set this size is a serious investment wherever you live, so for many the Main Tower will be more a shelf-dream than a real purchase. But dreaming is free. And you, do you already have a piece of Hogwarts built at home?
