“In many ways that suits the relationship as it’s been many years since they’ve seen each other.” Law explains. “We learn a little about his past in the beginning of this film, […] but we’re not going to reveal everything all at once.”
The friendship with Grindelwald ended when Dumbledore was 17 years-old. Even though the movie is set decades later, Warner Bros. has hired actors to play their teenage selves. Therefore, some flashbacks of the relationship may be featured.
Dumbledore is not teaching Transfiguration
Jude Law also revealed that, at this stage in his career, Dumbledore is not teaching Transfiguration. It seems that he is teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. In the trailer, the character appears in the subject’s classroom and, during a flashback, he teaches a young Newt how to face a Boggart.
Jude Law did not lean on the acting of Richard Harris and Michael Gambon
Along with the director of the movie, David Yates, Jude Law decided it would not be valid to build a younger version of Dumbledore based on the acting of Richard Harris, who played the character in the first two films, and Michael Gambon, who took over for the next six. “We wanted to look at who he was in this moment and construct our own version”, explained the actor.
Despite knowing the character well, either through books or movies, because of his children, the actor received help from the screenwriter J. K. Rowling to build the character. “She gave me a very good sense of Albus’ life journey and who he was and what was happening in his head and his heart and his world for this particular story”, he said.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald takes place in New York, London and Paris, with references to the Harry Potter stories. A few months after being captured, Grindelwald dramatically escapes from MACUSA and conquers followers to his wizarding supremacy cause. With help from the magizoologist Newt Scamander, the only wizard capable of stopping him is Albus Dumbledore, a Hogwarts professor. The sequel premieres on November 16th, 2018.
