John Lithgow will be Albus Dumbledore — and the casting makes perfect sense
by Marcelo NevesWhen John Lithgow’s name began circulating in the rumours, part of the fandom was intrigued. When the confirmation came in February 2025, the reaction was almost unanimous: it makes sense.
Lithgow, 79, is one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. Oscar-nominated for Conclave, celebrated on television as Winston Churchill in The Crown, a brilliant comic talent in 3rd Rock from the Sun — the man moves between drama and lightness with a ease that very few actors possess. And Dumbledore needs exactly that: a blend of profound wisdom, gentle humour, and the quiet sadness the character carries throughout the series.
The weight of the role
Lithgow himself was honest about the gravity of the decision: “It was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter.”
That says a great deal. Richard Harris created a serene, paternal Dumbledore in the first two films. Michael Gambon brought more intensity and urgency when he took over. Lithgow becomes the third actor to wear the Hogwarts headmaster’s robes — and each will leave their mark.
For those of us who grew up with Harris and Gambon, there’s an inevitable adjustment period that every fan knows well. But if there’s one thing we’ve learnt over more than two decades of covering Harry Potter, it’s that the characters are bigger than any single actor. Dumbledore will still be Dumbledore.
Welcome to the Wizarding World, John.
