HBO opens auditions for Harry, Ron and Hermione, and anyone can apply
by Marcelo NevesThe moment many fans had been waiting for with a mixture of nerves and excitement arrived on 10 September 2024: HBO officially opened the casting process for the three most important roles in the series, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
The search is open. Any child can apply. And the requirements are simpler than you might expect.
Who can audition
Children aged between 9 and 11 (as of April 2025), resident in the United Kingdom or Ireland. That’s it. No prior acting experience required, no agent or manager needed.
How it works
Candidates needed to submit two self-tape videos by 31 October 2024: a reading of a short poem or story of their own choosing (interestingly, they were asked to avoid anything Harry Potter-related), plus a quick personal introduction with date of birth, height and location.
The casting directors appointed to lead the search are Lucy Bevan, whose credits include Barbie, The Batman and Belfast, and Emily Brockmann. High-calibre professionals for a high-calibre search.
The character descriptions
The official character descriptions were concise and precise. Harry is “brave, loyal, finds comfort in friendship.” Hermione is “brilliant and determined, passionate about knowledge and justice.” Ron is “loyal and good-humoured, from a large and loving family.”
The production made its commitment to inclusive and diverse casting clear from the start, no restrictions on ethnicity, sex, disability or sexual orientation.
The submission deadline was 31 October, with workshops planned for January 2025. Somewhere out there, a new trio was about to be discovered.
