“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” breaks nomination record for a theater prize

The play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” carries on as a success for the public and the critics.

Today a whole host of stars attended a ceremony held in London for the announcement of the nominees for the 17th Annual WhatsOnStage Awards, the major theatre prize-giving decided entirely by the theatregoers themselves.

In total 48 productions have been nominated and “Cursed Child” leads the list with 11 nominations. It is the first time a play is nominated for so many categories.

WhatsOnStage’s Chief Operating Officer declared:

“I think it’s amazing that for the first time a play leads with 11 nominations; that’s unheard of and reflective of the impact Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has had on the West End”.

The play is running for: Best Actor in a Play (Jamie Parker), Best Supporting Actress in a Play (Noma Dumezweni and Poppy Miller), Best Supporting Actor in a Play (Anthony Boyle and Paul Thornley), Best New Play, Best Direction (John Tiffany), Best Set Design, Best Costume Design, Best Video Design and Lighting Design.

In the Best Actor in a Play category, Jamie Parker will face two other actors also known by Harry Potter fans: Kenneth Branagh (Professor Gilderoy Lockhart – Chamber of Secrets) and Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort).

With the nominees’ announcement, the voting for the public has started. If you would like to vote for “Cursed Child”, you can do trhough thislink.
