Lumos

J.K. Rowling’s NGO that seeks to close orphanages will get a Documentary on HBO

Lumos, the NGO founded by J.K. Rowling, will get a documentary produced by the paid TV channel HBO. Called Finding My Way Home, the program will be aired on December 2019.

The documentary will tell stories from the families that were helped by Lumos, that works to help children and teenagers who live in orphanages to return to their families. The movie will also show the journey of the people involved in the project, like social workers, and will be directed by Jon Alpert and Matthew O’Neill, Emmy winners.

J.K. Rowling and Lumos

Created in 2005 by J.K. Rowling, Lumos seeks to help children and teenagers who live in orphanages to return to their families. According to the NGO, from the 8 million children who live in orphanages and institutions around the world, about 80% are not orphans but were separated from their families due to poverty.

The Harry Potter author founded the institution considering that the life inside an orphanage harms the child’s well being. “A person who grows up in an orphanage is ten times more likely to be involved in prostitution, 40 times more likely to be involved in crime and 500 times more likely to commit suicide”, explained Rowling in an institutional video.

Lumos has been working to encourage the European Commission to establish regulations that state that fundings to the EU Members States must be used for community services. The movement has already helped to transfer over 360 million euros from institutions to community services in Europe.

Since 2005, the NGO has worked in Europe, Haiti and the United States. To learn more about the institution’s work and find out how to help them, visit the official website.
