The Philosopher's Stone

First edition of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is being auctioned for 60,000 pounds

A first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will be auctioned by Bonhams, an auction house in London, England. Even though it wasn’t autographed by J.K. Rowling, it is estimated that the book will be auctioned between 40,000 to 60,000 pounds. The auction will happen on March, 27th.

The first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone had 500 copies. From those, 300 were sold directly to libraries. The book has other special details, such as the author being mentioned as Joanne Rowling at the back cover sheet and the spelling error “Philospher’s” at the back. In this edition, “Wand” also appears twice in the school’s supplies list for the first-year students in Hogwarts.

The edition was donated by Christopher Little Literary Agency in 2003, responsible for the first Harry Potter editions. It was donated to gather funds for charity institutions. Besides the book, the donation also had a card signed by J.K. Rowling, which will also be auctioned.

In November 2017, a copy in good conditions was sold for 106,250 pounds. In that year, The Philosopher’s Stone broke three times the record for highest bid in a book auction.
