6 touristic spots from Fantastic Beasts in New York
by Equipe PotterishEven though Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set in New York City from the 1920s, many of the places seen in the film still exist and are open to tourists to visit them.
Besides being the main touristic place in New York City, Times Square is also one of the biggest victims of the Obscurus wrath in Fantastic Beasts. Although it is very different from the version from the 1920s, it is a must-go for every tourist. There you can also watch Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
How to get there: access through the subway is very easy, as almost every line stops at the 42nd St-Times Square.
Looking for the runaway Erumpent, Newt and Jacob visit Central Park, one of New York’s biggest postcard spots. It is there where you can see the Gapstow bridge, where Newt does his “mating” dance to attract the Erumpent.
How to get there: take the N, R or W lines towards uptown and get off at the 5th Avenue station.
The Woolworth Building inspired the MACUSA headquarters. Built-in 1913, it was once the city’s tallest building. In Fantastic Beasts, it is also by No-Majs and Wizards.
How to get there: the building is located in Downtown Manhattan. To get there, take the 2 or 3 subway lines, get off at the Park Place station and walk to 233 Broadway.
The biggest department store in the US, Macy’s was founded in 1902. Its main branch is located in Midtown Manhattan, at West 34th St. It is inside the store that Newt, Jacob, and Tina find the Demiguise and the Occami – who were hidden among the Christmas decorations. Between November and December, the store has a thematic floor in which one can find any Christmas ornament they like.
How to get there: the closest subway station is 34th St. Almost all subway lines go through this station.
The Manhattan Bridge appears in the background when Credence and his siblings are giving away leaflets about the New Salem Philanthropic Society.
How to get there: The bridge is located on Main St., in Brooklyn. It is possible to get there using the A, C or E subway lines to the High Street-Brooklyn Bridge station.
The 124 Old Rabbit Club inspired the Bling Pig, the bar where Newt and friends go looking for clues about the Obscurus. “Bling Pig” was the bar’s nickname during the Alcohol Prohibition in the US during the 1920s. Citizens had to go to these undercover places. The bar keeps its mysterious atmosphere until today.
How to get there: the bar is located at the 124 Macdougal St. The A, B, C, D, E or F, subway lines stop at West 4 St- Washington Sq Park and walk there.
