Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

“For some characters, Grindelwald is the answer, says J.K. Rowling in new Fantastic Beasts video

In a new video released by AT&T, screenwriter J.K. Rowling and the cast of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald discuss the danger of Gellert Grindelwald’s manipulative power.

“The crimes of Grindelwald have been crimes of violence and terror, but we also see his immense seductive power,” says the author. For the first time Johnny Depp discusses his character in front of the cameras: “Grindelwald, who is this very, very powerful, manipulative menace to the world, is convinced that the only way forward is total domination over the people.”

About the plot, Rowling says: “What I consciously wanted was to have this gallery of people whose backstories we understand. [In this film], we get to know their own personal struggles, biases, traumas.” According to her, Grindelwald will be the breaking point between the characters. Some will be able to see beyond and stand against the wizard, but for others, Grindelwald is the answer to their problems. Katherine Waterson, who plays Tina, reinforces the message, saying the film shows “the extreme danger of a person who has figured out how to use fear to control.”

Directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Johnny Depp and Jude Law in the lead roles. The movie premieres on November 16, 2018.
