Niantic reveals details about the Wizarding version of Pokémon Go

Niantic’s CEO, John Hanke, revealed in interview to the Financial Times that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, game that promises taking Pokémon Go to the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling will be launched on the second half of 2018.

John also took the opportunity to reassure the fans that the launch of Wizards Unite will be superior to Pokémon Go’s, which suffered with constant server issues and frequent news about pokéstops in peculiar spots, once all those problems served as learning experience for the company, which is in a “much better position” to deal with them.

“The ‘muggle’ world and the wizarding world are only separated by this thin veil. It’s very easy for us to imaging bringing that kind of magic into our everyday lives”, explained the CEO, affirming that not every franchise would work in augmented reality. “It would be much harder to bring a convincing Star Wars game into AR in any way that is not just a gimmick.”

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was the first game announced by Portkey Games, company founded by Warner Bros. to promote partnerships and game releases related to the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling. It will be the third game developed by Niantic, which besides Pokémon Go also launched Ingress.
