Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Producer of ‘Cursed Child’ talks about cast and working with J.K Rowling

A few weeks ago, the complete cast of the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” was revealed. There’s also the information that rehearsals have started. With the play’s preview foreseen for May, there’s not much time left before fans start seeing something of the production. The play’s producer, Sonia Friedman, gave an interview recently on the program Front Row on BBC radio and talked about the cast and the casting process, about taking on the project and the beggining of her career.

Winner of four Tony Awards and nine Olivier Awards, Sonia has a long successful career. She has worked on more than 140 productions in the last 20 years. In her interview, she talked about her projects for 2016 and about working on a production so big as Harry Potter besides co-producer Colin Callender and writer Jack Thorne.

Sonia spoke about the play’s production:

“We had an idea that we took to J.K. Rowling and her management and the idea was that we’d like to put Harry Potter on stage, but with a different story.”

The producer also added that the author J.K. Rowling is “very involved in the story.” About the cast, Sonia said they choose Noma Dumezweni as Hermione because she is “phenomenal” and that they had worked with her previously on a few workshops, which are always a benefit on the development of good relations. She also said that with a cast of 34 people, it was “inappropiate to not represent society on stage.”
