Teacher creates a Harry Potter themed classroom

//Por Aline Michel - Friday, 22 de September de 2017 às 16:52

Kyle Hubler is a teacher in Oregon, United States, who turned his classroom into a Harry Potter themed decorated environment.

Hunker has been teaching the seventh and eighth grades for four years at Evergreen Middle School in Hillsboro. He had already added a few Harry Potter elements in his classroom last year but, when he found out he would change rooms, he decided to make a decoration even more similar to Hogwarts’. Besides using objects from his own collection, Hubler also purchased others through informal selling and Facebook ads. It took him 70 hours, through the course of five weeks, to get everything ready.

The idea for the decorating came up when, while speaking to his students about dreams, he realized he could turn his childhood dream of going to Hogwarts into reality. Although he had to make a few changes, he feels he made his twelve-year-old self proud.

When the students saw the classroom, they reacted with enthusiasm. Hubler tells he even heard sighs.

“I love Harry Potter because of the impact it had on me as a kid. Being a kid can be tough sometimes ― there were times when I felt weird and that I didn’t belong to any circle of friends, and reading the books was a way to escape that and feel like I did belong. As I grew up, I became more skilled in socializing and developed stronger connections with friends, but the lessons in the books about acceptance, loyalty, and integrity stayed with me and inform a lot of the philosophy I have in my approach to teaching and how I interact with my students,” Hubler told HuffPost.

Researchers from a British university published and article drawing attention to the danger of extinction of certain owl species thanks to illegal trade.

The study, published in “Global Ecology and Conservation”, points out that the increase of this animal’s illegal trade can be, in some way, connected to the Harry Potter series. In 2001, when the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released, only a few hundred owls were sold on bird markets in Indonesia. In 2006, this number outreached 13 thousand animals, according to researchers Vincent Nijman and Anna Nekaris.

In Indonesia, the animals are sold at low cost, between 10 and 30 dollars, value accessible to most of the families that want an Hedwiges as a pet. The big problem is that the owls put to purchase are taken mostly from the wild, which makes this practice illegal. Besides, the owls sold as pets are kept in poor conditions and many end up with very short lives.

After reading this news, J.K. Rowling took Twitter to condemn the practice that endangers owl’s lives.

It is worth reminding that this is not the first time the author speaks out in defense of of these animals. In 2001, Rowling had already made a statement about the subject:

“If anybody has been influenced by my books to think an owl would be happiest shut in a small cage and kept in a house, I would like to take this opportunity to say as forcefully as I can, ‘you are wrong. The owls in Harry Potter books were never intended to portray the true behaviour or preferences of real owls. If your owl-mania seeks concrete expression, why not sponsor an owl at a bird sanctuary, where you can visit and know that you have secured him or her a happy, healthy life.”

British Transport Police warns Harry Potter fans

//Por Rodrigo Cavalheiro - Tuesday, 23 de May de 2017 às 06:00

This weekend, the British Transport Police send out an alert to Harry Potter fans visiting the Glenfinnan viaduct, known as the scenery for many Hogwarts Express scenes. The viaduct, part of the West Highland Line in the Scottish Highlands is trespassed by fans seeking good photos of the iconic location.

Sgt Kevin Lawrence said:

Alarmingly, visitors often get off the train at Glenfinnan and walk back along the line to take photographs. This is extremely dangerous. The scenic, rural area also attracts many bikers and other tourists also travelling by road to see the viaduct.
When they are caught up in the excitement of their trip, people may not realise that what they are doing is trespassing on the railway, risking the lives of themselves and other people who could be travelling on trains passing through.

He also explained that because of this problem, more fences had to be put and signage was improved to indicate safe vantage points for photos that don’t access the lines.

Despite the many warnings and stories of people who lost their lives, last year saw a rising of the number of trespassing cases by 16%. The cases also show that younger people are more prone to risk their lifes on the tracks, with seasonal peaks in incidents coinciding with the spring and summer school holidays.

Much as we love Harry Potter, I would like to remind everyone that we are mere Muggles, and if you trespass on the railway and are struck by a train, the consequences could be extremely serious and probably fatal.
People need to be aware of the immense danger they are putting themselves in by trespassing on the railway line. One slip, one stumble, one fast moving quiet train, and your life could be gone in a flash. Trespass is not worth the risk.

During the months of May and October, visitors can travel through the rout between Fort William and Mallaig, the same where the scenes of the Hogwarts Express were filmed on a steam locomotive similar to the wizarding train. The service comes from the West Coast Railways, the same company who provided the locomotive repurposed as the Express for the movies and can be seen at the Leavesden studios as part of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter.
