“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” Breaks Highest Number of Awards Received Record At The Olivier Awards

Yesterday (09) the winners for the Laurence Olivier Awards, one of the biggest awards in British theatre, were finally announced. The play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child broke a record, leaving with nine awards, the highest number ever granted to any production.

At the ceremony, which took place at the Royal Albert Hall, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child won for Best Lighting Design (Neil Austin), Best Sound Design (Gareth Fry), Best Director (John Tiffany), Best Costume Design (Katrina Lindsay), Best Set Design (Christine Jones), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Anthony Boyle as Scorpius Malfoy), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Noma Dumezweni as Hermione Granger), Best Actor (Jamie Parker as Harry Potter) and the most important award of the night, Best New Play.

J.K. Rowling, who didn’t attend to the awards ceremony, declared on Twitter that she “couldn’t be more delighted for our immensely talented cast and creative team”.

The play didn’t win for Best Theatre Choreographer (Steven Hogget), losing to The Red Shoes (Matthew Bourne), and Outstanding Achievement in Music (Imogen Heap), the latter going to the children who play instruments live in the musical inspired by the movie School of Rock.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is being performed at the Palace Theatre in London since July of 2016, and is on its way to conquer Broadway, in New York, where it will be greeted by a theatre completely renovated by the production team and planned by the play’s designer, Christine Jones and the director, John Tiffany.
